I finally brought myself to buy this bag of Jeon! Every time I look in the frozen section at H-Mart, I am always drawn to the section of Korean pancakes. There are the usual ones you can get – seafood, kimchi, and potato to name a few. For some reason, I gravitated towards Hansang‘s pancakes with Perilla Leaf.

What is Kkaennip-Jeon?

For those of you who are not familiar with Perilla leaf, it’s an herb very commonly used in Korean cuisine. It’s very similar to Japanese shiso and has a taste that closely resembles basil and mint. You’ve probably seen it being used in wraps for meat or even pickled as a side dish.

Hansang’s Frozen Perilla Leaf Pancakes (Kkaennip-Jeon)

  • Hansang Brand offers other variations of Korean-style pancakes – Seafood pancake, leek pancakes, and even potato pancakes!
  • This Perilla Leaf pancake is stuffed with fish paste.
  • Make a side dipping sauce with this! We just used what we had on hand, which was ponzu sauce.
  • Feel free to air fry these! We opted to pan fry but admittedly, it took quite a bit of time to develop the browning since we did not thaw them. Air frying would have been way quicker.

Honest Review/Thoughts

I was pleasantly surprised to see fish paste when I bit into one of these pancakes! The perilla leaf is coated in a really light batter, making for a perfectly crispy bite.
The perilla leaf itself was incredibly fragrant – sometimes herbs can lose its flavor once frozen, so I’m happy to report that isn’t the case here. I thought it lended a much needed fresh/clean taste to a fried dish!
I would recommend grabbing a bag of these to try, especially if you want to branch out to other varieties of Korean pancakes!
