In 2022, I’ve made a goal to spend less money on eating out. This means I’ll be doubling down on grocery shopping just so I can recreate my favorite restaurant dishes at home! When I want to plan a hamachi donburi dinner to make at the end of the week for the family, Shirakiku (https://www.wismettacusa.com/our-products/)’s Buri Loin works just perfectly.
What is Buri Loin?
“Buri” means “yellowtail”, while “hamachi” means “young yellowtail”. Hamachi refers specifically to Japanese amberjack, a type of tuna. Buri loin is smooth and buttery, but still has enough bite to it, in terms of texture. It has a traditional fish taste, similar and a bit ‘fresher’ tasting than Maguro (bluefin tuna). Some say that buri sometimes rivals toro due to its fat content!
Buri is a whitefish that is simultaneously rich and light, and has a sweet taste.
Shirakiku Buri Loin Premium
- Shirakiku’s Buri Loin can be used in a variety of ways, such as grilling, braising, and even eating raw.
- The package is vacuum sealed, ensuring freshness.
- A great option for those who want to DIY sushi nights at home.
Honest Review/Thoughts
Since this package is vacuum sealed, I was happy to see that the fish itself did not secrete any excess moisture. Big plus! The texture was nice, firm and indeed buttery! We all agreed the fish maintained its freshness and quality. Once thawed, the loin was easy to cut into sashimi slices. Use a sharp knife to cut the block, just like they do in the restaurants! If eating raw, I suggest eating it all the same day, otherwise, you can try to re-freeze the rest for grilling or braising. This package was great because it is very inexpensive and could potentially save you lots of money as opposed to eating out! Be versatile with this – you can make a poke bowl, sushi rolls, etc! Get creative ๐

Where to Buy
I found Shirakiku Buri Loin at my local asian markets in the frozen section (Kukje Supermarket, H-Mart, Suruki Supermarket).
